Sangre Grande police have seized the licensed firearm of a Sangre Grande Regional Corporation councillor as they investigate an incident that caused him to draw the weapon on a municipal police officer.
According to reports, on Thursday around 7 am, the municipal police officer was on his way to work when an alleged “bad drive” escalated into an argument between the councillor and himself.
Reports stated the councillor was exiting a minor road and driving onto a major road while the municipal police officer was passing, near the Guaico traffic lights.
An argument ensued and the police officer exited his vehicle. At that point, the councillor said, he became fearful and drew the firearm.
The police officer reported the incident to officers of the Sangre Grande Eastern operational centre, who located the councillor and had a conversation with him.
He was then taken to the Sangre Grande Police Station, where statements from both men were recorded. The police will keep the firearm until inquiries have been completed.
Corporation chairman Kenwyn Phillip said when he heard about the incident, he immediately tried to contact the councillor but was unsuccessful.
